World Day of the Sick: "In Lourdes, we live at chair height"

On the occasion of the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes and the 30th World Day of the Sick, the rector of the sanctuary of Lourdes, Mgr Olivier Ribadeau-Dumas, returns to the notion of fragility and the importance of mercy, in a context where the pandemic has disrupted relations.

This 30th World Day of the Sick has a particular resonance at the sanctuary of Lourdes, where February 11 is also the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes and the anniversary of the first apparition of the Virgin Mary to Saint Bernadette in 1858.

This year, the day instituted by Saint John Paul II unfolds according to a theme dear to Pope Francis: “Be merciful, as your Father is merciful” 


Mercy, the faithful experience it in their flesh and soul, often wounded, when they come to the Pyrenean sanctuary. With Mary and thanks to the attention of the people they met, their hope was rekindled. And it could be from this Friday in an even more symbolic way, since after two years of closure due to the pandemic, the cave of Massabielle becomes accessible to the public again.
